Expansion Slots


Bus slot or expansion port, an expansion slot is a connection or port located inside a computer on the motherboard  that allows a computer hardware expansion card to be connected.

Types of Standard Expansion Bus Slots


  1. 1.Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) Bus Slot:  
  • Expansion slots which are used to enhance the features of the PC. 
  • ISA  bus is 16 slot bus present in  80286, 80386, 80486,and Pentium systems. 
  • The ISA card is configured through jumpers or Swithches.
  •  All modern computers today no longer included the ISA slots.
Examples of ISA devices:

  • Network card
  • Sound card
  •  Video card


2. Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Bus slots:  
  • It supports plug and play and it is self -configuring. 
  • It operates at a speed of 33MHz or 66 Mhz 
  • It is a 64 bit bus
  • Communicates with processor using a bridge circuit

Examples of PCI devices:
  •  Modem
  •  Network card
  •  Sound card 
  • Video card
