Expansion Slots
Bus slot or expansion port, an expansion slot is a connection or port located inside a computer on the motherboard that allows a computer hardware expansion card to be connected.
Types of Standard Expansion Bus Slots
- 1.Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) Bus Slot:
- Expansion slots which are used to enhance the features of the PC.
- ISA bus is 16 slot bus present in 80286, 80386, 80486,and Pentium systems.
- The ISA card is configured through jumpers or Swithches.
- All modern computers today no longer included the ISA slots.
Examples of ISA devices:
- Network card
- Sound card
- Video card
- It supports plug and play and it is self -configuring.
- It operates at a speed of 33MHz or 66 Mhz
- It is a 64 bit bus
- Communicates with processor using a bridge circuit
Examples of PCI devices:
- Modem
- Network card
- Sound card
- Video card
